Switches the body into repair mode
The autonomic route — the gas pedal and the handbrake
The longest of the twelve cranial nerves, running from the brainstem all the way to the gut. The only place it crosses the diaphragm is the esophageal hiatus — which is why breathing can reach it.

What this line does
The autonomic nervous system runs in two modes: sympathetic (stand by to fight) and parasympathetic (repair). Deep repair happens only while the parasympathetic side leads. Its trunk is the vagus nerve, which runs from the brainstem to the heart, the lungs and the gut, and gathers the vestibular system — your sense of balance — onto the same route.
How to train it
The aim is to raise vagal tone. Inversion stimulates the baroreceptors; deep pressure and a long, slow exhale increase vagal outflow; rocking settles the vestibular system; interoception brings attention back inside the body. Every one of them steers the body toward the parasympathetic side.
Go deeper
About 80% of vagal fibers are afferent — they report the state of the organs back to the brain. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the measurable sign of whether that traffic is running.
Clues
The body will not stop, and neither will the mind
- You lie down and your mind becomes more alert, not less
- You wake at the same hour each night and struggle to get back to sleep
- Your heart rate never quite settles during the day, and small things startle you
- Even at rest you catch yourself clenching your jaw or lifting your shoulders
With the sympathetic side always on, the body treats rest as standing by. The posture relaxes, but the nervous system never switches over.
Inversion puts the head below the heart, and the baroreceptors in the neck press the body’s “safe” switch. Only once that switch is thrown does repair actually start work.
Test it yourself
Lie down and count ten breaths, noticing whether the shoulders truly drop. If they are still braced at the end of the count, the switch has not happened.
